The Poon’s Supper Club Story
I’m Kevin, a Fiji-born Singaporean Private Chef and Photographer in Singapore.
POON’S SUPPER CLUB first started as part of my Hundred Daughters Hundred Patience Hundred Meals [百女百耐百膳] project, in memory of my father and in celebration of his life as a restauranteur.
My father Poon Pak Noi migrated to Fiji from Hoiping, China and opened Poon’s Restaurant in Nadi, Fiji in 1970. I was born in Nadi soon after. Poon’s Restaurant grew to be the most popular restaurant in town during the eighties and nineties. Upon retirement, my parents both left Fiji and joined me in Singapore in early 2000s.
Through POON’S SUPPER CLUB, I now offer food, goods and conversation from my family kitchen and our diasporic history – from the rice farms of Kaiping in South China, to the coconut beaches of Fiji in the South Pacific, to the makan streets of Southeast Asia.
In Search Of Heat, a four-part series documenting my journey pursuing my love of chilli, premiered 19th June 2022 on ChannelNews Asia.
My story was featured in The Business Times on 5th July 2019 and in Shin Min Daily, and had its first exhibition at Singapore International Photography Festival 2020. Read more about the project in this Q&A with Suan Chiang.
